I weathered the test pretty well, though, and I don't know if that's a good sign or a bad sign. I'm afraid handling it too well might point to my body being used to sugar high and lows (this theory is based on nothing, as many of my theories are). I had a snack the night before at 9:30pm. I waffled between avoiding all sugars and most carbs in the days prior to the test and I opted to go with my usual diet, minus the M&Ms. I went with the latter, so my snack was strawberries and blackberries. As you intelligent readers have reminded me, certain fruits pack alot of sugar, but I do want to know my true risk for GD not a modified diet that I won't be likely to maintain if I pass.
So, anyhoo, I had my snack at 9:30pm on Thursday and then showed up at the lab at 8:30am on the dot for my fasting blood draw. For work, I have summer Fridays from Memorial Day to Labor Day (i.e. afternoons off) so I settled in to get my work done on my laptop, knowing I'd be free as a bird after the final test at 11:30 - yay! The time actually passed pretty easily, I was surprisingly productive with work and they had the Today Show on in the waiting room, though I was unlucky enough to be forced to watch on "Justin Bieber" day (the shrieking is still ringing in my ears). Is it me or is his hair 'do really stupid? It's almost like he's a balding 50-year old man trying to hide it with a weird, frontward-swipe comb-over. A quick googling just now lets me know that, apparently, I'm not the only one who thinks this ;).
Back to the test, the techs alternated arms for the 4 blood draws and I got a sticker at the end with a drawing of a whale that said "I did very whale", haha. At 11:30, I hopped on the T to Back Bay, where NoodleGuy works, and we met up for some yummy Italian for lunch. I was amused that I went from fasting/glucose testing to a heavy carb lunch of pasta and bread, but what can you do? ;)
I spent the sunny afternoon strolling on Newbury Street and finally parked myself at an outdoor patio at Starbuck's with my Decaf Iced Cafe Americano in one hand and a good book in another. I actually went to high school with the author of said book, I think I'll post about that in a later date - she was a couple of years ahead of me, but her experience got me to thinking about the unusual aspects of going to high school in Manhattan. Believe it or not, Gossip Girl is not really a realistic portrayal ;).
I'm hoping to get my GTT results on Monday, I'm including this chart partly for my own use, but also in case anyone else finds it handy. It's from the American Diabetes Association website:
| Interval | Abnormal reading |
| Fasting | 95 mg/dl or higher |
| One hour | 180 mg/dl or higher |
| Two hours | 155 mg/dl or higher |
| Three hours | 140 mg/dl or higher |
Finally, I wanted to cross-post with one of my message board/blogging buddies, Mic. I think alot of you already read her blog, but for those who do not, she posted a wonderful story of inspiration and hope that crossed her path yesterday. For those still struggling with infertility, whether in the trenches or just having problems moving on, it's a great reminder that we're not alone in this and more people than you realize are fighting the same fight.
Glad the 3 hour fast went okay! I love they gave you a sticker at the end. =) And your discussion of starbucks now makes me want to go out and get some... i am addicted to their iced coffee with rasberry syrup added... oh so tasty!
ReplyDeleteHappy the test is over and you didn't feel horrible during it! It made me LOL that you were stuck listen to Justin Beiber day on the Today Show =) What's hilarious is that 1/2 the boys at my nieces school have that same haircut...and they flick their heads to the side like he does too...totally funny!
ReplyDeleteYeah that 3 hour drink was so not good. I would have rather had 2 of the 50's to make my 100 than drink that 100. I'm jealous you got 5 minutes to drink yours, my lab gave me exactly 2 minutes to finish the drink. I handled it well too, but passed so I don't think it's a bad thing. They kept waiting for me to puke or pass out, but I knew that would just mean doing it all over again. I never felt sick though so hopefully that will mean good results for you too. I agree with not changing your diet, it seems counterintuitive to me to try to "beat" the test. If my eating habits suck I need to know that, not that I can eat differently for a few days and pass the test only to go back to my horrible habits. Jealous of your sticker too!! :) Glad you survived it and hope the results come back just fine!!
ReplyDeletehope all goes well with your test! i'm jealous you made it through no problem. mine was a nightmare!
