OK, maybe not 'epic' but I've always wanted to use that phrase ;). Anyway, I failed my one-hour gestational diabetes glucose test, boooo. My OB's cutoff is 130 and I scored a 135, so I barely failed but the competitive, nerdy student in me does not like to fail anything!
I go in this Friday at 8:30am to get a fasting blood draw, then chug the McDonaldland orange drink again and then I sit captive in their office for three hours while they do 3 more blood draws at 9:30am, 10:30am and 11:30am. They won't let me leave apparently, because too many women pass out in between all the blood draws and non-eating/drinking. You should have seen NoodleGuy's face just from me talking about 4 blood draws in 3 hours - his nightmare!
Luckily, my OB's office has free wifi, so I can bring my laptop and work while I'm there which will pass the time. I'm also told to bring a "sugary snack" with me for after the last blood draw because I'll feel shaky -- which of course seems counter-intuitive to this whole blood sugar thing, but whatever.
I'm really, really hoping that I pass the 3-hour test because I have been eating pretty well. Not eating hardly any processed foods, getting lots of fruits and as many veggies as I can (I will admit I could probably cram more celery down my throat but I do what I can in the form of salads). I do confess to having developed a fondness for ice cream while pregnant - I normally never eat it - but surely a little ice cream at the end of the day isn't all that bad. Besides a decaf iced coffee or a lemonade during the day, it's often the only active sugar (I'm not counting the occasional salad dressing, etc that has sugar as an ingredient) that I consume all day. I never drink soda -- that's good right??? RIGHT???
My OB isn't concerned since I barely flunked the 1-hour and she says that most people who flunk the 1-hour then pass the 3-hour, so I'm hoping I follow that trend. I have a vacation to Key West in 2 weeks and want to eat my way through the Keys! ;)
All else is peachy keen -- I had a great Memorial Day weekend. I want to start a campaign for mandatory 3-day weekends every week. There's something about a 3-day weekend that feels soooo much longer than a 2-day!
Oh booooo! That stinks Lara but I'm going to guess that you'll pass the 3 hr test with flying colors since you were so borderline.
ReplyDeleteBTW, in case I never shared, I work in the field of Diabetes so feel free to ask me any questions :) you've got my email address, right?
So yeah, you don't get to drink the fun orange drink this next go-around ... it will likely be a red fruit punchy drink which isn't nearly as yummy.
Your sugar intake is imporant but your carbohydrate intake is just as important as well. You can find a TON of information on the internet about the Gestational Diabetes Diet and there are a million different ways to dissect the information by the different Dr.'s. In fact, some OB's do a cutoff at 139 for the initial 1hr. test! And, of course, it depends on the lab you have the sample drawn at ... yadda, yadda, yadda.
One thing - do you eat a lot of grapes, strawberries and watermelon? That *could* be your problem with the hint of high blood sugars.... I'm seeing that with a lot of GD patients right now. High Blood Sugars because of all the yummy fresh fruit with high glucose values :) If that's the case, maybe just lay low on those things this week and I bet you'll be a-okay on Friday!
Good luck on Friday! And I'm with your hubby- the thought of them having to take my blood 4 times in 1 visit would be one of my nightmares too! I'm with you on the 3 day weekends too- which congressman do we need to write to?!? ;)
ReplyDeleteYou'll pass!! Sorry you failed your 1 hr. My 1hr was 137 which my normal OB considered a pass, but the next appt I saw a new OB and she said she would feel more comfortable if I did the 3hr. So I did. I passed. I hope you get someone whose a good stick, that was the worst part for me. 3/4 of my draws were done by a pincher. :(
ReplyDeleteeww... i'm sorry!! That really stinks. I think something like 50% of people fail the 1 hour and most of them pass the 3. That majorly stinks you can't leave the entire time too! At least there is wi fi! good luck!
ReplyDeleteI bet you'll pass the three hour with flying colors! Happy they at least have wi-fi to help pass the time =)
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that you have to go through the 3 hour test! It sounds like it is very common though. That is cool they have wifi to help the time go by faster.
ReplyDeleteYeah for your upcoming vacation to Key West! I will be in Puerto Rico around the same time = )
And I noticed that you have 99 days to go! How exciting that you are under 100 now = )
Bummer! My sister actually refused the test (she's allergic to corn, and they use high fructose corn syrup in that drink). Her doc wasn't too happy, but she asked her what she'd do if she failed it, and the doc said, well, I'd recommend you eat a low-glycemic diet, etc. My sister said - I'm already eating that way, every day! So...what's the point?
ReplyDeleteShe ended up making her check her insulin levels every day for a couple weeks, but then just let her be. I thought it was kinda funny :), but I'm sure her dr. just thought she was being difficult.
Anyway, that was not really relevant to anything, but GOOD LUCK with the 3 hour! Hope you pass with flying colors :).
Good luck Good luck Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAnd I know I'm behind, but your belly pictures look awesome and Bug looks adorable! Congrats!
Good luck tomorrow -- I hope you pass and can eat your way through the Keys. That's the way vacation should be done.
