IVF #2.5 - Egg Transfer

Phew! I meant to post earlier in the day but when I got home, I ate lunch and then crashed for a serious nap. The kind of nap where you wake up all "Huh? Where am I? What day is it? Is it 4:30am or pm?" I'm not sure why I was so wiped out, egg transfers are pretty easy. But maybe after 18 days of stimming, a very up & down cycle emotionally, egg retrieval surgery and finally this ET, my body finally felt like it could relax. No drives to the clinic every other day, no more injections, no more worrying and crossing my fingers until the nurse calls. The love-it-or-hate-it 2WW is upon me.

So, ladies, the news is that we transferred 4 embies today!
  • Two of these were 8-cell HIP (high implantation potential, my clinic's highest embie ranking). YAY!
  • One was an "excellent" 7-cell/grade 3 -- my clinic's highest grade, translating into well-defined cells and low fragmentation
  • One was a 4-cell/grade 2 -- the RE who did my transfer said not to rule this one out, but it really should be @ 6 cells on Day 3 and the had more fragmentation than ideal.
Here are my Fab Four:

Of the 5 eggs that had fertilized on Thursday, one arrested yesterday, so was out of the mix. All in all, I'm very happy. I was praying to have at least two quality embies to transfer and I got three. If you had told me on Stim Day 10 of this cycle that I'd have transferred 3 great embies, I would have fainted dead on the floor.

I need to qualify my hope because the sad fact is that my eggs are still 39-year-old eggs with a history of miscarriage even if they implant. The RE, upon my arm-twisting, gave us a 20% chance of pregnancy overall. And then from that number, a 20% chance of twins and a < 5% chance of higher order multiples. We discussed those higher-order multiples for a while because NoodleGuy and I made sure she understood in no uncertain terms that WE DO NOT WANT QUADS. Or even triplets. But it's all a numbers game, and we were comfortable with the < 5%, which the doc said is probably more like 2-3% anyway.

I've been relaxing on the couch for most of the day, except for a mild panic attack I had @ 5pm when NoodleGuy hadn't yet returned from his run - he's training for the Boston Marathon - and it had been dark for half an hour. I sat here worrying for that half hour before I finally put my coat on and went outside, afraid he was passed out on the bike trail that runs behind our house. Wouldn't you know it, as I left the house, he was walking in another door, so we missed each other. So, I walked out to the trail, called his name, and came back - maybe about 200 feet total. I know you're supposed to stay reclined the whole day, but the brief exercise seemed better than sitting here worrying. And, yes, he's fine -- just decided to run extra today since we're getting a snowstorm tonight. Sigh...boys.

My beta is 12/30. I'll spend the majority of the 2WW (or, really 11WD - 11 waiting days) visiting my family in TX, so it'll be a good distraction. For now, I am PUPO.

  3. Fingers crossed, those are some nice looking embryos for certain. For what it's worth, my RE at our favorite clinic gave me a less than 5% chance of getting pregnant with one when we did our IUI with three follicles and I ended up with triplets. Don't worry, I can hook you up with a great multiples group in the area if things go that way :)

  12. Such great results... 4 to transfer! I agree that 3 implanting would be scary but I am sure that only 1 or 2 will stick around. Happy PUPO.

  14. I totally understand the husband running freak-out! Mine will go running in the dark all the time. I bought him a bright yellow vest and he does wear that, but he won't carry his phone! He has an ID attached to his shoes and he says someone will call me... but I'm not too sure about that. I'm thinking of getting a GPS tracker so I'll be able to monitor his movements... is that possible?

I hope the holidays will make this TWW fly by!!!
