FISH results

First and foremost, the FISH results were great, yippee! For who haven't had reason to have FISH testing, here's the quick description:

FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) is a cytogenetic technique used to detect and localize the presence or absence of specific DNA sequences on chromosomes. FISH uses fluorescent probes that bind to only those parts of the chromosome with which they show a high degree of sequence similarity.

Bascially, the lab analyzes about 8-12 skin cells that were sloughed off the baby and within the amniotic fluid. FISH allows for rapid detection of the most common fetal chromosome anomalies, including Trisomies 13, 18 and 21 (Down Syndrome) and aneusomies of the sex chromosomes, X and Y.

All of the cells analyzed on Bug were normal and matched! The test is considered a conservative 90% accurate, so we still need to wait on the final amnio results for 100% accuracy and a thumbs up on a bunch of other conditions, but the FISH results were as good as you could get.

The post-amnio bleeding had also almost completely stopped - still a random fleck here and there, but dark brown and definitely not new blood. My theory on the whole thing was the the spot they injected through my uterus might have have a vein crossing it - as the uterus is all engorged with blood and veiny. Plus, I had a laprascopy in February 2008 for Stage IV endometriosis, so Lord knows what kind of endo might be around again. Anyway, I think something was nicked, hopefully outside the womb, to cause a scary situation but (please Jeebus) nothing major. Bug's heartbeat last night and this morning was tip-top.

So, I guess that's it for today, gonna go watch Grey's Anatomy and half-heartedly participate in my baseball fantasy draft. Oh, wait....what's that? Did I forget something? Hmmm, let me think... I picked up the dry-cleaning, called the lawn company, answered a bunch of emails. Nope, I think I'm all caught up.

Ohhhhh!!! Did you maybe want to know whether Bug is a Blue Bug or a Lady Bug? Well... much to our non-surprise, Bug is a BOY! A troublemaker from the start to be sure, scaring mommy like that two days ago! We were pretty sure all along that he was a boy, so we would have been floored (but thrilled) if Bug had been a girl. A friend of mine was asking what we were rooting for and said everyone secretly has a preference, even if they say they don't. And I had to correct him that if you've gone through IF for 3 years and have 2 miscarriages and 3 dead babies to show for it, no, you truly don't care about gender. As long as the baby is healthy, the world is fantastic. So, welcome, Baby Boy Bug, to our fantastic world! :)

I feel pretty darned good about my pending cartwheel list but will wait until we get the final amnio results to cross that last sucker off the list!

  1. Congratulations on great FISH results & on the identity of BabyBoyBug! (And I totally agree with you. After multiple IVFs, multiple losses, I honestly didn't care even a little bit what flavor we got. No preference once I got that "healthy" thumbs up!)

So happy for you & your excellent results!

  7. Doing the happy dance for you! Congrats on the boy--you will LOVE him. Sons adore their mamas, and if you raise him right (and I'm sure you will), he'll always treat you like a queen.

  8. I'm so f-ing excited for you! This is the best news...a great FISH report and a babyboybug! Hell yeah! We need to organize a cartwheel day like they do on St. Paddy's Day for taking a drink of Guiness. We need to pick a time and all of us do a cartwheel together when you get past the last hurdle. Have you bought anything blue yet? When you do, we need to see pictures. I'm so happy for you I can't even stand it!!

  13. Congrats on team blue!! Boys are the best :)

(though I am biased - and yes, as an IF woman, if I had a baby girl, I would say they are the best instead)
